Nanojade

Mechanism of Action

Deferasirox is an iron chelating agent that selectively binds iron, forming a complex that is excreted primarily through the feces.

Indications
  • Chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions (in patients ≥2 years of age)
  • Chronic iron overload in non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia syndromes (in patients ≥10 years of age and with a liver iron concentration of at least 5 mg of iron per gram of liver dry weight (mg Fe/g dry weight) and a serum ferritin >300 mcg/L)
Dosage Instructions
  • Tablets: Swallow with water or other liquids at the same time each day. Administer on an empty stomach or with a light meal (contains <7% fat content and ~250 calories). For patients who have difficulty swallowing whole tablets, may crush the tablets and mix them with soft food (e.g., yogurt, applesauce); consume entire mixture immediately after preparation (do not store for future use).
  • Do not take simultaneously with aluminum-containing antacids.
Precautions

Warnings and Precautions

Consult your doctor before taking Nanojade if you have any of the following conditions:

  •  Auditory disturbances (decreased hearing and high-frequency hearing loss)
  • Bone marrow suppression and cytopenias (including agranulocytosis, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and worsening anemia)
  • Dermatologic toxicity (skin rash)
  • Gastrointestinal reactions (GI hemorrhage or ulceration)
  • Hepatic failure (ALT, AST, and bilirubin)
  • Hypersensitivity (including anaphylaxis).
  • Ocular disturbances (lens opacities, cataracts)
  • Renal failure

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

In case of pregnancy or breast-feeding, consult your doctor before using Nanojade. Additionally, if you decide to become pregnant or breast-feed while using this medication, it is essential to consult your doctor. If pregnancy occurs during the use of Nanojade, it is necessary to consult your doctor.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines; including the following: aluminum hydroxide, atazanavir, bendamustine, busulfan, pirfenidone, theophylline derivatives, tizanidine.

Side Effects

Dermatologic: Skin rash
Gastrointestinal: Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
Genitourinary: Proteinuria
Renal: Increased serum creatinine

If you take more Nanojade tablet than you should
If you have taken too much Nanojade tablet, or if someone else accidentally takes your tablets, contact your doctor or hospital for advice straight away. Show them the pack of tablets. Medical treatment may be necessary.

If you forget to take Nanojade tablet
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember that day. Take your next dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose on the next day to make up for the forgotten tablet.

Contraindications
  • Known hypersensitivity to deferasirox or any component of the formulation
  • eGFR <40 mL/minute/1.73 m2
  • Poor performance status
  • High-risk myelodysplastic syndromes
  • Advanced malignancies
  • Platelet counts <50,000/mm3
Storage

Keep the medicine away from light and moisture at a temperature below 30°C.
