Mechanism of Action

Ticagrelor reversibly and noncompetitively binds to the P2Y12 receptor on the platelet surface, thereby reducing platelet aggregation.

Indications (Uses)
  • To reduce the risk of cardiovascular (CV) death, myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or a history of MI.
    • Ticagrelor also reduces the risk of stent thrombosis in patients who have been stented for treatment of ACS.
  • To reduce the risk of a first MI or stroke in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) at high risk for such events.
  • To reduce the risk of stroke in patients with acute ischemic stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack (TIA).

Warnings & Precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Venotica if:

  • You have an increased risk of bleeding because of:
    • A recent serious injury
    • Recent surgery (including dental work)
    • You have a condition that affects blood clotting
    • You recent bleeding from your stomach or gut (such as a stomach ulcer or colon ‘polyps’)
  • You are due to have surgery (including dental work) at any time while taking this medicine. This is because of the increased risk of bleeding. Your doctor may want you to stop taking this medicine 5 days prior to surgery.
  • Your heart rate is abnormally low (usually lower than 60 beats per minute) and you do not already have in place a device that paces your heart (pacemaker).
  • You have asthma or other lung problems or breathing difficulties.
  • You develop irregular breathing patterns such as speeding up, slowing down or short pauses in breathing.
  • You have had any problems with your liver or have previously had any disease which may have affected your liver.
  • You have had a blood test that showed more than the usual amount of uric acid.
  • If you are taking both ticagrelor and heparin:
    • It is important that you inform your doctor that you are taking both ticagrelor and heparin, as ticagrelor may affect some diagnostic tests.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines — including the following:

  • Other P2Y12 Inhibitors (e.g., Clopidogrel and Prasugrel)
  • Aspirin (antiplatelet agent)
  • CYP3A4 Inducers (Strong): e.g., Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Rifampin, and Carbamazepine
  • CYP3A4 Inhibitors (Strong): e.g., Clarithromycin, Erythromycin, and Ketoconazole
  • Dabigatran Etexilate (anticoagulant agent)
  • Fondaparinux (anticoagulant agent)
  • Itraconazole (antifungal)
  • Systemic Morphine (opioid analgesic)
  • Topotecan (chemotherapy medication)
Side Effects

Dyspnea: In most cases, dyspnea is self-limiting and resolves within 1 week of treatment.

If you take more Venotica than you should
Talk to a doctor or go to hospital straight away. Take the medicine pack with you. You may be at increased risk of bleeding.

If you forget to take Venotica

  • If you forget to take a dose, just take your next dose as normal.
  • Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.
Contraindications
  • Hypersensitivity (e.g., angioedema) to ticagrelor or any component of the formulation
  • Active pathological bleeding (e.g., peptic ulcer, intracranial hemorrhage)
  • History of intracranial hemorrhage
Storage
  • Store this medicine at a temperature below 30°C, away from light and moisture, and in its original packaging.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
